City of Ashtabula, Ohio

City Auditor

Michael A. Zullo, CPA

I have been with the City of Ashtabula for seventeen years as the City Auditor. A graduate of the University of Akron and Lake Erie College, I was in public accounting until being appointed by city council to the City Auditor’s position. I earned my CPA license in May of 1992, becoming the first CPA to work for the City of Ashtabula.

The City of Ashtabula has been awarded 16 consecutive Comprehensive Annual Financial Report Awards and the City of Ashtabula under the direction of myself, the Deputy Auditor, and Treasurer was one of the first Cities in not only the State of Ohio but the entire country in implementing GASB 33, 34 and 36 early. We are currently working on our fifth GASB 34 compliant CAFR.

Financially as of December 31, 2003, our City has experienced the same economic slowdown as the rest of the country. Our City Income Tax is down by approximately 450,000 dollars from the year 2000. We have tried hard to stay the course and make decisions on spending today that will benefit the City of Ashtabula for many years to come. A few examples of this would be the purchase of the Keybank Building for our new City Hall, the purchase of a piece of land on Wade Ave. for future annexation possibilities, and our continued commitment of better equipment for all employees.

The City of Ashtabula is continually trying to find ways to save and invest taxpayers dollars to get the most of every penny we spend.

Born and raised in Ashtabula, Michael now resides in the City of Ashtabula with his wife Jennifer, three daughters Millicent, Mikenzie, Carolee, and one son Michaelangelo.

My hobbies include chasing deer, turkeys, and Nascar auto racing.
